摘要: Metropolitan Detroit's Advanced Traffic Management System (ATMS)/Advanced Traveler Information System (ATIS) is one of the largest freeway management deployment projects undertaken in the era of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS). The project's scope applies new surveillance monitoring components over 148 centerline freeway miles in addition to integrating the existing system's 32 miles into a single ATMS/ATIS. This project also involved a new procurement method for the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) in that the project was contracted under a Design/Build/Warrant procurement approach. In parallel with this deployment, the FHWA was undertaking a milestone effort to develop a National ITS Architecture for application as a template for the definition and implementation of future Intelligent Transportation Systems. With the challenge to design and build a large-scale, transportation management system, the project also defined a goal for the integrated ATMS/ATIS design to conform with the National Architecture to the maximum extent possible without the benefit of a defined and coordinated architecture framework. This goal added another dimension to this already complex deployment challenge and fostered a distinct change in the evolution of the design. In turn, the resultant deployment design benefited from the on-going National Architecture effort through direct collaboration with the personnel developing the architecture, and extended the National Architecture's effort by prototyping user service operational concepts and market packages outlined by the program.
