A significant challenge for a driver-assistance system is to predict where the driver should be and how to get there. This requires the system to provide the driver with a continuous predicted path to follow while traveling, which would normally include turns, changing lanes, changing speed and stopping. The predicted path would incorporate road information including current vehicle position target address, street network, traffic information and surrounding traffic. Such systems would become critical to drivers in adverse driving conditions including periods of limited visibility and traffic congestion. Position Inc. has developed guidance technology for agricultural applications that would, if extended in scope, be directly applicable to en-route driver-assistance systems. The two fundamental components of Position Inc.'s new technology are the real-time path prediction algorithms and the real-time path visualization technique. Position Inc. has filed a patent application for both components of this technology. The predicted vehicle path is generated through the analysis of the spatial relationships between all moving and stationary objects around the current vehicle position. Three-dimensional virtual reality techniques are used to display the vehicle path on a full-color graphical user display. The virtual reality display shows the predicted path, landmarks and a map view of the surrounding area. A land vehicle navigation and guidance application would incorporate the path generation algorithms and the visualization technology as part of the overall driver assistance system. |
