The majority of roadway toll structures in the US are based on vehicle class (type). Accurate identification of the vehicle class is therefore, very important in collecting the correct toll. Many toll agencies around the country utilize automatic vehicle classification (AVC) systems to determine the correct vehicle class and toll. In addition, some agencies use the AVC toll information to audit toll transactions. The State of Florida Office of Toll Operations (OTO) is currently using a combination of an overhead mounted ultrasonic device and a treadle as their AVC system to audit toll transactions. In the AVC system, the ultrasonic device functions as a vehicle separator while the treadle functions as an axle counter. Frequent failure of the existing ultrasonic device demanded a search for an improved vehicle separator. As a result, an "improved" ultrasonic device and an inductive loop-based system, Idris, was field tested to evaluate the performance in separating vehicles. The test was performed in a manual lane at Anderson Plaza on the Veteran's Expressway in Tampa, FL. The vehicle separation accuracies of the two devices during am and pm peak hours during a 3-day period were evaluated. Plaza CCTV camera output was used as the ground truth data. Consequent evaluation revealed that both devices performed well in vehicle separation. |
