摘要: TransCal is a field operational test sponsored by the Federal Highway Administration and the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) designed to evaluate the effect that accurate, real time traveler information has on the PUB Published by: lic along the main travel routes between the San Francisco Bay Area and Reno/ Carson City in Nevada including the year round destination resorts of Lake Tahoe. What is special about the TransCal test is that two different coding standards are used in the broadcast of traveler information so they can be evaluated for their ease in integration into the system and their effectiveness in conveying meaningful traveler information quickly and accurately. Since TransCal uses a high speed FM sub- carrier supporting a throughput of about 8,000 bits per second, it is possible to use the more descriptive Bearer Independent Format (BIF) coding standard proposed by the International Traveler Information Interchange Standard (ITIS) along with the more traditional Bearer Application Protocol (BAP) that is common in Europe and the U.S. The BAP standard is used with the In-Vehicle Devices and the BIF standard is used with the hand held computers (personal digital assistants) and the interactive kiosks. Since the BIF standard is intended for computer-to-computer two way messaging, most of the traveler information systems today don't use it for broadcasting traveler information. The BIF standard is verbose compared to the BAP standard but it also offers a much richer set of traveler information descriptors than does the BAP. BAP coding is used throughout the U.S. and Europe in the Radio Data Broadcast Standard and the unique implementation of both BIF and BAP codes in the TransCal system afford a very unique opportunity to evaluate the two standards in a real world environment.
