The Advanced Transportation Weather Information System (ATWIS) is currently the nation's only rural operational in-vehicle road/weather condition information system. The requirements of such a system were 24-hour operations for timeliness, research in mesoscale weather prediction modeling for finer detailed site-specific forecasts, a central database location accessible by the PUB Published by: lic, and clear direct lines of communication between the operational forecast center and all weather and road condition data sources available. This large amount of data ingestion required a decision support system (DSS) designed to manage data, weather forecast model output, and provide a road/weather condition interface with information service providers for timely dissemination of short term site-specific nowcasts/forecasts. The DSS's evaluation of complex information makes it possible to immediately assess present and forecast weather conditions in specific travel corridors. The mission of ATWIS is to demonstrate how the merging of these technologies can produce a safer and more efficient transportation environment for both highway maintainers and the general traveling PUB Published by: lic. With 18 months of operational experience during both extreme winter weather conditions and flooding in the region, lessons learned for future Advanced Traveler Information Systems (ATIS) and the future of ATWIS warrant review. |
