摘要：	Society in general, and the transportation infrastructure, is unprepared for the exponential increases in the number (and relative proportion) of older citizens. Resolving issues of personal mobility and access to people, places, and essential items of living should NOT be viewed as simply a case of providing conventional transportation options for the increasing number of elderly individuals. Instead multidisciplinary collaborations should be initiated using an approach that is based on first understanding the needs and desires of older citizens and then identifying or creating effective assistive technologies for adapting to changes within the older individual, in his/her environment, and in interactions with his/her environment. This comprehensive approach is possible through the development of effective human-machine-environment- time systems within the framework of gerontechnology (an emerging applied science and academic discipline that is concerned with the effective use of technology to extend the years of active life expectancy--the amount of one's life that is relatively free of assistance from others in conducting the activities of daily living). The field of gerontechnology is growing rapidly in Europe but is relatively unknown in North America. This paper recommends that the development of adaptive technologies in transportation and communication that are designed to extend the years of safety, unrestricted mobility, and social accessibility should be based on fundamental input from the fields of geriatrics, gerontology and gerontechnology.
