To address the concerns of motor carriers and to take advantage of emerging Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) technologies, the I-95 Corridor Coalition, representing the 12 states stretching from Maine to Virginia, sponsored a study to develop a commercial vehicle operations program for the I-95 Corridor. A critical element of this program was the development of an operational test to assess the market for and utility of traveler information services for commercial vehicle operators. This paper discusses research conducted by Cambridge Systematics, Inc. on behalf of the I-95 corridor Coalition to analyze existing motor carrier activity in the Corridor; examine motor carrier routing and dispatching operations; identify motor carrier information needs; and develop an operational test for a traveler information service for commercial vehicle operators. The paper provides an overview of the following: the methodology used to examine motor carrier routing and dispatching operations and to assess their information needs; the key findings of this research; and the recommendations for an advanced traveler information service operational test for commercial vehicle operators. This operational test recently was approved by the I-95 Corridor Coalition's Executive Board. It will be administered by the ATA Foundation, Inc., a research arm of the American Trucking Association. |
