摘要: Rural transit operators provide many individuals with their only means of transportation to medical appointments, shopping, work, school and numerous other activities. The state of Texas has 41 rural transit service providers covering approximately 80% of the state. With many of these systems operating in sparsely populated areas, ensuring a responsive service and safe and efficient operation is crucial. The Texas A&M Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) Research Center of Excellence (RCE) is currently implementing and assessing a wide variety of ITS technologies for various transportation applications. One RCE demonstration project explores the use of automatic vehicle location (AVL) for rural transit service providers. A primary focus of this demonstration is to utilize affordable ITS technologies for rural transit operators in Texas. This paper describes and assesses the RCE AVL demonstration project. It employs two technologies, global positioning system (GPS) and ultra-high frequency (UHF) radio, to locate and communicate real-time vehicle positions.
