摘要: The Northern Virginia (NOVA) region is a heavily populated and rapidly growing metropolitan area. Despite its extensive multi-modal transportation system, the provision of coordinated transportation services in the region is a significant challenge. Numerous agencies ranging from the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), to local police departments, to the Metro transit agency, etc., have developed sophisticated management systems to operate their systems effectively and efficiently. However, the complex interdependencies of the transportation system make it necessary that these individual management systems work together efficiently. Such coordination will provide integrated transportation system management (itsm) for the region. First the authors present the overall systems methodology for the development of ITSM for Northern Virginia. Their approach is based on an iterative and interactive design methodology documented using Military Standard 498 (MIL-STD-498), the Department of Defense standard for software development and documentation. While the methodology behind MIL-STD-498 is a classic waterfall approach to software design, the authors have adapted this approach to be both interactive and architecturally centric while maintaining the rigorous documentation requirements of the military standard. The interactive approach enables them to capture specifications in an environment with multiple, distributed organizations and jurisdictions. Also by focusing on the architecture they have created the framework in which heterogenous systems can communicate and expand with minimal impact on other systems. Finally, their approach uses the formality of MIL-STD-498 to ensure that operation and design are well-documented and communicated to all current and potential users. They also present an overview of their vision of the ITSM. This vision is based on the creation of an information-based ITSM infrastructure for Northern Virginia. The critical components of this infrastructure are a data warehouse, an extranet accessed using a web-based browser, software wrappers for legacy systems, a "fusion server", and standard communication protocols. The fundamental premise of this system design is that information storage, fusion, and sharing will be critical for improved transportation operations and management.
