摘要: As more and more in-vehicle ITS systems are deployed, the need to develop standards to make these systems safe and user-friendly is becoming increasingly urgent. Both public and private sector organizations are increasingly cognizant of the need for safety standards for in-vehicle systems. Systems are currently deployed which have obvious safety concerns. For example, currently available navigation systems allow drivers to scroll through restaurant choices whilst driving 70 miles per hour. The system integration issues associated with having multiple ITS in-vehicle systems interactive with the driver - for example, a collision warning system, a traffic information system, a hands-free cellular phone, and a mayday system - are not currently a safety issue but will be in the near future. A large number of ITS safety issues can and should be addressed with sensible safety and human factors standards. These issues primarily have to do with driver distraction and driver information overload. Human factors standards are needed to ensure that ITS systems are easy to understand and operate, and therefore do not distract the driver from the primary driving task. Driver information overload is a more tricky problem, dealing with integrating multiple systems safely into the vehicle in a way that provides the driver with useful information in a timely fashion. This paper discusses both general safety and human factors standards needs and specific standards currently under development by SAE (the Society of Automotive Engineers) and ISO (the International Standards Organization).
