The U.S. system of traffic signs, signals, and pavement markings provides a means of communicating important information to drivers that may not be available to them through any other means. This system of traffic control devices is basic in its concept of providing specific information based on colors, shapes, symbols, and/of devices are developed or modified over the years and as transportation agencies take different, yet subtle, approaches to utilizing devices for similar traffic situations. Previous driver comprehension research on traffic control devices has determined that a number of devices have a high potential of being misunderstood by a significant percentage of the adult driving population. A review of education-related materials and survey assessments of teenage drive education instructors, law enforcement personnel, and teenage drivers entering driver education has been conducted to identify specific problematic devices that should be focused upon during the education process. On the basis of previous driver comprehension studies and results of this study, researchers have made recommendations to improve driver education with respect to traffic control devices. |
