摘要: The commercial potential of the autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) is now just beginning to be realized in the fields of environmental monitoring, oeanographic sampling, and undersea search and survey. The AUV was initially conceived as a naval ordnance delivery technology (torpedo), but its possible uses have expanded with revolutions in microelectronics, computing, sensing, battery technologies, acoustics, and miniaturization. MIT's Odyssey II vehicle exemplifies progress in this area. Even with these advances, however, the authors regard the AUV technology as still in the infancy of its commercial potential. In this report, the authors examine the potential opportunities-both public and private-for the application of AUV technologies in Massachusetts Bay.
