Road infrastructure is the most important of all public assets, as it provides access to employment, social, health and education services and is key driver of economic development, trade and social integration of the country. However, at the same time, it is also important to ensure sustainable development including protection of environment and maintaining ecological balance. Road infrastructure consists of roads, bridges, flyovers, culverts, elevated roads, tunnels, vehicular & pedestrian underpasses, Railway over bridges, foot over bridges grade separated interchanges, footpaths, cycle tracks etc. In the current financial year 2020-21, the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways (MoRTH) has achieved important milestone by constructing 13,327 km of National Highways i.e., with construction of 37 kilometres per day. In addition, prestigious Bharatmala Pariyojana, Golden Quadrilateral Project, NHDP program, PMGSY, Setu Bharatam, and Sagarmala Project, Smart City, and other State Government owned road development program are also underway. On the other hand, the deterioration of bridges & other structures and high maintenance cost is a major concern for various Departments and engineers. Deterioration of structures is a common phenomena and can be caused by a variety of factors, such as corrosion due to marine environment, high chloride content in the air, alkali-silica reactions, chemical reaction, heavy loads, adverse climatic conditions, poor initial design, poor construction & maintenance and natural disasters such as earthquakes and cyclones, etc. |
