These barriers are also provided on road sections with sharp curves, approaches to bridges with restricted roadway, high embankment slopes, hazardous obstacles such as advertisement boards, poles, roadside trees or vehicles coming from the opposite direction after roll over the medians. Concrete median barriers were first used in the mid-1940s on US-99 on the descent from the Tehachapi Mountains in the central valley south of Bakersfield, California. However, New Jersey type barrier were later introduced in the current form across the USA and quickly adopted in the Developed World. India quickly adopted them after examining their proven performance abroad. Presently, barriers are classified as Flexible/Semi Flexible Road Edge (Road side) barrier and Rigid (concrete) Median barriers.
