The stability of rock slopes is considered crucial to public safety in highways passing through rock cuts, as well as to personnel and equipment safety in open in hilly terrains. Slope instability and failures occur due to many factors such as adverse slope geometrics, geological discontinuities, weak or weathered slope materials as well as severe weather conditions. External loads like heavy precipitation and seismicity could play a significant role in slope failure. The Evaluation of rock slopes adjacent to the hill roads with rock mechanics approach considering with the geological surprises and adversities play a major role in establishing the mechanics of failure. National and State highways are aligned through unstable rock slope stretches in mountainous terrain and is highly prone to failure and require a set of suitable remedial measures to stabilize them. The Paper deals with a critical assessment of different types of geological and geotechnical investigations for rock slopes, Shear Strength of Rock Mass, Rock Engineering investigations, Rock Mass Rating (RMR), Slope Mass Rating (SMR) and Rock Mass Quality(Q) for hill rock slope along with other studies which help to evolve a set of cost-optimized remedial measures for stabilization of rock slopes. |
