This paper presents different improvement proposals of existing Bus Rapid Transport System (BRTS) based on deficiency of existing BRT System in India and other countries. BRTS has been criticized by people using private transport in Delhi India, due to reduction in speed in mixed lane in its stretch of 5.6 Km, although volume of passengers that moves in BRT corridor are much larger. A case study has been considered and it is found that provision of exclusive lane for BRTS is justifiable. Different improvement proposals are considered namely, provision of fly over/underpass for BRT Lanes, single lane/two lane-elevated BRT corridor and single lane BRT with passing lane on road/elevated situation. A generalised speed flow curve has been developed based on field investigation data including traffic data. Passenger Car Unit (PCU) per hour per lane has been developed for different improvement proposals, average speed of vehicle has been established using generalised speed flow curve. Vehicle speed in BRT lanes varied from 26 Km/hr to 32 Km/hr and vehicle speed in non-BRT mixed lane varied from 13 Km/hr to 31 Km/hr adopting different improvement proposal based on speed flow analysis. The improvement proposals increase the speed of the entire network and not only the BRT traffic. |
