摘要: Appurtenances on a bridge include the bridge protective system, clearance gauges, lighting or any other attachment or accessory such as bearings, expansion joints and wearing coat. Operational life of expansion joints, bearings and wearing coat is usually shorter than that of the bridge. In the last two decades there has been exponential growth of bridges and grade separators in our Highway system. Although much literature is available on the Inspection, Strengthening and Rehabilitation of bridges which inter alia include Appurtenances, the issue of maintenance of these secondary elements in bridges is not getting enough attention. The road user invariably complains of bad riding quality of bridges attributable to appearance of cracks and pot holes in the wearing coat and hammering effect at the location of expansion (deck) joints caused due to local damages in concrete surface. It is well known that adoption of steel bearings has diminished after the advent of Elastomeric bearings and High load Multi-rotational bearings (Pot/Spherical bearings etc.). Simultaneously there has been substantial development in the field of expansion joints which are far superior to those like filler board type or butt or cover plate type joints.
