The impact of Covid-19 on the energy sector and thus also on maritime shipping, as well as the prospects for an energy transition away from oil, are interlinked and subject to enormous uncertainties in the short term. For the tanker market in particular, only a slight recovery is seen for 2020, and beyond that, the first reports for 2021 do not bode well, as the Norwegian brokerage firm Fearnleys describes in a report: "2021 has started with a bang; for the first time in years we have seen fixtures closing with negative earnings." Following statements of the International Energy Agency (IEA), global oil demand in 2021 will still not reach 2019 levels, despite a slight recovery, and at 97.7 million barrels/day will still be 3.4 million barrels/day below pre-Corona results. |
