A snowdrift prediction algorithm was used to develop guidelines for computer-assisted design of drift-free roads. This program requires estimates of the precipitation, snow depth, and prevailing direction of blowing snow over the snow accumulation season. Default values for these variables were developed for Wyoming by analyzing all historical climatological data for the State. Data on the prevailing direction of snow transport was supplemented by field measurements of snowdrift features over three winters. The resulting maps of precipitation and wind direction provide the information required for applying the snowdrift prediction and road design program. The report includes a summary of the characteristics of blowing snow, and the mathematical models for estimating the quantity of blowing snow for which control measures must be designed. The computer routine includes recommendations for the height, placement, and orientation of snow fences. |
