摘要: The latest surveys indicate that average prices in the trucking industry increased at a year-over-year 6.5% pace. That's a turnaround from a 0.7% decline in prices one year earlier. In July, inflation rates in truckload and LTL increased 10.9% and 4.3%, respectively, as both sped up more than a full percentage point from the previous month. Examining underlying cost trends, opportunities to put the brakes on price hikes are hard to find. Supported by the U.S. Census Bureau's input/output tables, our detailed cost models show the industry's hard costs (materials and equipment costs, driver wages and fuel) are increasing at a challenging 5.7% year-over-year pace. Cost analyses for U.S. airliners paint a grim picture. Over the most recent 12-month period compared to a year earlier, total costs have increased 4.7% thanks to a 10.5% jump in fuel costs and a 6.9% hike in direct labor costs. Meanwhile, average industry transaction prices declined at a 10.1% annual pace. On the cargo front, prices for airfreight on chartered flights increased 2.8% and on scheduled flights inched up only 1.5%. With such a wide cost/price divergence, our model roughly estimates that pre-tax operating surplus is down about $15 (per-$100-of-market-valued services) from a year ago. To repair margins, passengers will bear the brunt of hefty price hikes ahead.
