The rapid price escalation trend in the trucking industry appears to be cresting now. A look at the three-month-moving-average rate reveals inflation peaked at 14.7% in the second quarter of 2021 and slowed to an estimated 13.9% in the third quarter. We forecast it will slow to 10.5% in the final quarter this year. With higher wages helping reduce driver shortages and global supply constraints hopefully slowly correcting, quarterly inflation rates should be much more manageable for shippers beginning in the second quarter of 2022. Average annual inflation rates for TL and LTL, respectively, will be 18.3% and 9% this year and are forecast to be 4.7% and 4.3% next year. |
