AS 2021 MOVES ALONG, a prevalent theme within freight transportation and supply chain circles continues to be the elevated state of U.S.-bound imports. Many of the reasons for this go back to the outset of the pandemic, which started to fully impact port operations and all other facets of logistics beginning in March 2020. In the subsequent months since then, U.S. consumers stuck at home and following social distancing guide- lines began to order more goods online, leading to increasing U.S. import volumes and fostering a cycle of ordering, fulfillment and distribution that has yet to stop. Not surprisingly, the impact on U.S. ports continues to be significant, with the two biggest U.S. ports, the Port of Los Angeles (POLA) and the Port of Long Beach (POLB), reporting record levels in recent months. In fact, POLA reported that April imports came in at 490,127 TEU, a 32.4% annual increase. Regarding the April import tally, POLA executive director Gene Seroka said that it has only been eclipsed twice before, adding that the consumer confidence index had increased for four straight months, through April, as Americans are both spending more and getting vaccinations, coupled with federal stimulus checks reaching households. |
