Spot market prices for trucking services are soaring and so too are the transaction price statistics gathered by U.S. government monthly surveys. The inflation trends in truckload and LTL are both accelerating at an unusually fast pace now. In the latest survey, prices for truckload services rocketed up 16.3% compared to a year ago. At the same time, LTL tags jumped 7.9% and local trucking prices climbed 4%. At the end of 2021, average annual prices for the entire industry are expected to have increased by at least 8%, a full percentage point higher than last month's forecast. That said, the post-pandemic recovery is just beginning, so don't be surprised by more upward revisions ahead. As air cargo volumes improve post-pandemic, U.S.-owned cargo planes doing chartered service are taking the opportunity to boost prices substantially. In the latest surveys, companies that fly cargo on nonscheduled flights report that they increased prices 12.3% above year ago levels. Averaging the data over the latest three-month time span compared to the same time period in 2020 reveals a 6.5% increase. That was the highest such inflation rate since July 2018. Meanwhile, U.S. airlines hauling freight and mail on scheduled flights raised their prices 2.1% over the same three-month period. Looking ahead, we anticipate these prices will increase 1.6% this year and 1 % next year. |
