The report contains the test procedures, test setup, and test results from two crash tests conducted at the Federal Outdoor Impact Laboratory (FOIL) located at the Turner-Fairbank Highway Research Center (TFHRC) in McLean, Virginia. Two exploratory research tests were conducted that attempted to adapt the Modified Eccentric Loader Terminal (MELT), currently used to terminate G4 strong-post guardrail systems, to the G2 weak-post guardrail system. The test vehicles used were a Ford Festiva two-door sedan and a Chevrolet Custom 20 Deluxe pickup truck. The results show that the G2-MELT performed adquately when struck by the Ford Festiva. However, the G2-MELT did not function as intended when struck by the pickup truck. The test results show that adapting the MELT to the G2 weak-post gaurdrail system is feasible. |
