| 摘要： | At the turn of the 20th century, the dawn of the automobile ushered in a new age for transportation in the United States. This technology was heavier, faster, and more dangerous than other forms of transportation at the time, but no uniformity existed around how the automobile should operate. Motorists were largely left to fend for themselves, causing hazardous situations for drivers and pedestrians alike. Out of this desire for safe and orderly movement of the car arose the need for traffic control devices-signs, traffic signals, and pavement markings. |
