A large number of herbicides were evaluated in this research that have potential use with wildflowers. The manager can use this research as a basis to begin development of a weed management plan that will minimize wildflower injury and maximize reseeding potential. Our research data suggests that Dazomet-Granular sealed by compressing may be a good economic fumigant for establishing wildflowers. Even though it may not be the best fumigant for weed control, the cost and ease of application may make it the most practical and effective for highway use. Even with soil fumigation, knowledge of weeds present at the site is still important since there are some weedy species such as clover (Trifolium spp.) that are not controlled with soil fumigants. Therefore, at sites with a heavy clover population, either the planting should be abandoned, relocated, or another method of preplant weed control should be used. Applications of herbicides with a wet blade as a means of selectively controlling encroaching vegetation has shown a good deal of promise. Triclopyr as a 10 to 50% solution has been effective for controlling sweetgum, maple, cherry and multiflora rose. Clopyralid has been very good on black locust, sumac and dogfennel. |
