September 13-15, 1995, Texas A&M International University, in cooperation with the Texas Transportation Institute, hosted a conference in preparation for the opening of the border for commercial trucking between the United States and Mexico after December 17, 1995, as provided for the North American Free Trade Agreement. Participants in the conference included state, authorities from Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona representing the law enforcement and transportation sectors of these states, and federal authorities involved in the transportation, immigration, and drug enforcement sectors of the Clinton administration. The conference's purpose was to put together all the government players involved in the border's opening in an attempt to ascertain and clarify potential problems likely to be encountered especially as a result of Mexican motor carriers operating in the four U.S. border states. |
