This study investigates safer, more cost-effective alternatives to U.S. Army Corps of Engineers paint specification C-200A, Coal Tar Epoxy Coating, which is used to protect steel sheet piling. Fusion-bonded epoxy, a nonpolluting shop-applied coating, was evaluated in laboratory tests as a potential replacement for C-200A. Laboratory tests that included salt and fresh water immersion, cyclic salt fog/ultraviolet (UV) condensation, impact resistance, and cathodic disbondment were conducted on four fusion-bonded epoxy and two control coating systems. Fusion-bonded epoxy coatings have excellent resistance to impact and cathodic disbondment. Resistance to corrosion in fresh and salt water immersion and in cyclic salt fog/UV-condensation exposures was comparable to the control coating systems. Based on the results of the laboratory tests, a field evaluation of fusion-bonded epoxy is recommended. jg. |
