Brake noises can be indicators of problems with the brake system; however, some noises from underneath the vehicle are often mistaken as brake noises. Being able to identify these noises and know what's causing them helps determine a proper solution. Many brake pads have a brake wear indicator, which is a piece of metal connected to the pad's backing plate or shim. When a pad wears down, the metal contacts the rotor, producing a high-pitched squealing noise. This noise means it's time for new brake pads. Low-frequency squeal is the result of the pad vibrating against the rotor, which is prevalent in semi-metallic pads. While there isn't much that can be done to fix the noise, steps to mask a low-frequency squeal include buying pads with a high-quality shim and weights on the backing plate. Manufacturers also add slots and chamfers to control noise. |
