Proximity keys, or "smart" keys, are becoming increasingly common. Unlike the days of old, these keys do not have to be inserted into an ignition switch. They only need to be near the immobilizer system - close enough so that they can be "seen" and the security credentials they contain can be read and validated by the control module(s). And when these systems fail, it can often leave the customer stranded. Rather than being able to push the Start button and hear the engine crank over, the only thing the customer is likely to experience is a message on the dash telling him or her "No Key Found." That is a frustrating event that I know all too well, having suffered exactly that with my old Ram pickup. Nothing like having your ride tell you it can't see a key when you're holding it in your hand. |
