It takes dozens of electronic control units, working in sync, to operate a modern automobile. All are dependent on a number of factors to work properly. You'll often hear a tech ask another if they have checked an ECU's voltage and ground connections prior to replacing one to ensure they were not the real cause of an ECU's erratic or failed operation. But what about the source of that electrical supply - the battery? When troubleshooting any electrical complaint, the very first step you should take is to verify the health of the battery. For example, if the battery voltage falls below a minimum threshold while cranking, it is possible for a number of ECUs to default back to their factory settings and lose whatever data they had stored in their volatile memories. Apply that to any of models today using "Start/ Stop" technology and you can see one reason why verifying a battery's condition is elementary to troubleshooting any number of customer concerns. |
