BACKGROUND: The Iowa Department of Transportation is reconstructing I-80, I-29, and I-480 in the Council Bluffs/Omaha metropolitan area, assisted by program manager HDR. Construction on this comprehensive redesign began in 2008 and includes updates to 14 miles of interstate, 47 bridges, and 12 interchanges, as well as a new dual, divided freeway configuration. MAJOR UPDATE: The full I-80/I-29 dual, divided freeway system, the first in the region, opened to traffic in mid-May. The new system improves safety, eases congestion, and offers redundancy, allowing traffic to keep moving in both directions, even if lanes are blocked because of a crash or maintenance. WHAT'S NEXT: Three more interchange reconstructions remain, with projects grouped strategically to maximize improvements while lessening impacts on the traveling public. Two are on track to be completed in 2022 and 2024. The final major package, I-80/ Madison Ave. Interchange, has been delayed to 2025 due to forecasted statewide revenue shortfalls in the coming years. |
