Builders on the 6,236-ft Cline Avenue Bridge in East Chicago, Indiana, faced a challenge: 19 concrete bridge segments, 75 tons each, had to be moved into place without blocking commercial traffic in the Indiana Harbor and Ship Canal below. A customized cantilever segmental bridge lift, designed and fabricated by Engineered Rigging, was attached to the bridge's edge and extended horizontally over the water. The lift featured four strand jacks, each with a lifting capacity of up to 1,405 tons, which supported a lifting speed of 60 ft/hour and enabled crews to move all 19 segments in just 16 days, while keeping the waterway open. The bridge opened on December 23, 2020. |
