School children are among the most vulnerable road users and continue to be at great risk in school zones and when boarding and disembarking a school bus. Each year, approximately 25,000 school children are injured when navigating to or from school, while on average 100 of these incidents are recorded as being fatal. Additionally, the illegal passing of stopped buses continues to be a leading contributor to the dangers that school children face daily, where in 2019 it was estimated that a staggering 17 million stop arm violations were reported. With a united goal of developing and demonstrating real-world C-V2X (Cellular Vehicle-to-Everything) technology, in an attempt to address these safety issues, a first-of-its-kind public-private partnership was formed. Audi, Applied Information Inc., Blue Bird Corp., the City of Alpharetta, Fulton County Schools, Oualcomm Technologies Inc., and Temple Inc. joined forces to develop next-generation connected vehicle applications with the end goal of providing safety benefits to children travelling to and from school. |
