I remember when I was running my fiber optic test equipment company, FOTEC, one of the tasks my employees liked the least was taking inventory. Everything had to be shut down for a day, maybe more at the end of the year, and every part used in manufacturing our instruments was counted and logged. The inventory of parts was given to our accounting department to calculate the value of the company assets for our financial reports. They would then use the inventory records to update our standard costs for every product. While inventory was sometimes painful, the data it provided helped immensely in running our business. |
