Northern Ireland's Department for Infrastructure (Dfl), which has sole responsibility for the country's roads, has told Highways that it aims to issue a draft new road safety strategy by March after its existing plan, published in 2011, expired in December.A new approach seems to be needed. Provisional figures released in early January by the Police Service Northern Ireland (PSNI) show that 56 people died on the country's roads during 2020, which was the same number as the previous year. In 2018, 55 people were killed.A total of 492 were seriously injured until 31 October 2020, down from 652 at the same point the previous year. |
