Mark Corbin is a natural bom communicator, with an eye for detail, anecdote and personal connections. His report for the Winston Churchill Memorial Trust, based on his international research into winter service, is a peculiarly enjoyable read. Though studiously focused, Mr Corbin somehow manages to make himself good company on what is a kind of travelogue of professional curiosity. He states the work is not intended to be an academic report; it is based on 50 interviews with winter maintenance professionals, residents, and users of the road system in Calgary, Toronto and Winnipeg in Canada, Stockholm and Borlange in Sweden, and his travels in Helsinki and Tampere in Finland. Yet, its author demonstrates the omnivorous insights (within the winter service sphere) of a public intellectual. |
