Cycling is enjoying what you might call the opposite of a perfect storm. A perfect calm perhaps; which, for anyone who has tried cycling into the wind, may seems like the perfect phrase. It's not just the lockdown, which saw numbers skyrocket before settling down to sustained increases, from London's 200% rise to Manchester's 25%. Nor is it just the fact that active travel seems to be the balm our sedentary and stressful lifestyles needed or the fact that it can save money, while also helping the planet. It is all of these factors of course, but it also might be a return of sorts to the old normal. The old, old normal that is. For instance, at a recent online conference organised by active travel charity Living Streets, transport minister Chris Heaton-Harris pointed out that a generation ago 70% of children walked to school, but this had dropped to around 50%. |
