Whether we're all going to be driving electric cars or cars with hydrogen fuel cells, the days of tailpipe emissions caused by the combustion of fossil fuels are very clearly numbered. Hurrah, obviously. But somewhere in the Treasury someone is worrying away at calculations, which show quite how quickly their income from fuel duty will evaporate. That's something in the region of £27bn per annum, when we aren't all being instructed to stay at home. Twenty seven billion pounds? Not so very much in comparison to the chancellor's borrowing over the last financial year. But still enough to be noticeable to a Treasury that could well find itself strapped for cash over the next few years. Hence, increasing speculation about what might take the place of fuel duty. |
