The £4.8bn Levelling Up Fund has been designed to support the development of 'high-value' infrastructure throughout the UK. Announced as part of the recent Spending Review, the fund is part of the Government's plan to boost growth and address regional inequalities. The aim is to deliver much-needed investment in places that often miss out. Ex-industrial towns, rural and coastal communities have all been highlighted as potential beneficiaries. Funding will be allocated for town centre and high street regeneration, investment in cultural and heritage assets and for local transport projects, such as road schemes. This is on top of previously announced transport-related spend, with bus and cycle infrastructure and the expansion of the railway network (including HS2) already on the Government's agenda and in progress. |
