Amid all the sadness of the last year, the sight of the Ever Given cargo ship stuck in the Suez Canal was generally greeted with ironic joy. The lesson of both COVID and Ever Given is that the more interconnected our world is the more it can all come grinding to a halt. In Ever Given's case, of course, no one seemed to be hurt (though some may have torn their hair out) and so it was a visual metaphor of human failure we could all get behind. If you think turning the proverbial, or indeed an actual, tanker is difficult, the world is going through a much bigger change as it moves away from carbon. Alongside other major oil and gas companies, Total has to help lead this change with one eye on preserving energy security and another on the energy of the future. Given the enormous pressures involved, it is not always an easy balance, as Mr Grant explains: 'There are two challenges. One is the expanding population and the growing need for energy and on the other side is the requirement to reduce emissions. We are seeking to be a top five renewables energy producer in the world, with a 35-gigawatt renewables portfolio by 2025, and we are on track to do that. We are also investing $3bn a year in terms of our renewables goals.' Total UK's bitumen division in Preston, Lancashire, is an example of the process in action. Central to the work done here is Total's core focus when it comes to highways, 'sustainability through durability'. |
