摘要: 'Let's use this extraordinary moment and the incredible technology that we're working on to make this decade the moment of decisive change in the fight against climate change and let's do it together.' - Boris Johnson, addressing the Leaders Summit on Climate, 22 April 2021 The 2015 Paris Agreement, signed by more than 190 countries around the world including India, China, Brazil, countries in the EU, and (given the Biden administration's immediate priority) the US, aims to limit global warming to 1.5℃ and requires signatories to 'balance' greenhouse gas emissions. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has interpreted this as requiring global carbon dioxide emissions to reach net zero by 2050. On 12 December 2020, the UK communicated its new Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) under the Paris Agreement to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. The NDC commits the UK to reducing economy-wide greenhouse gas emissions by at least 68% by 2030, compared to 1990 levels. It also includes information on how this target was developed and is quantified. In November this year, the UK will also host the 26th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26) in Glasgow. The climate talks will bring together heads of government, climate experts and campaigners to agree co-ordinated action to tackle climate change.
