I have reconciled myself with the likelihood that, based on the biblical estimate of my life expectancy, I should not delude myself that the road outside our house will be resurfaced in my lifetime. That's about nine-and-a-bit years from today, in case you were wondering. I might aspire to live a bit longer, but one has to cling to official statistics in these matters, just like the official fuel consumption stats for cars - definitively inaccurate but the best we've got. Does that matter? Perhaps not. The road is subject to a 30mph limit, a slightly mind-numbing set of parking controls (different on one side of the road from the other), but deeply scarred both by the method of construction (concrete slab with a thin layer of surface) and the intrusion of utilities. But still the buses trundle on through their route, I drive up and down from time-to-time, and if someone has been hurt from the poor road surface I haven't heard about it, at least not in the 30 years we have been resident. |
