The UK has a proud history of major road and tunnel programmes, including the first true underwater tunnel beneath the Thames in 1843. However, in recent years major UK tunnelling programmes have been reliant to some extent on European experience and knowledge. As we emerge from COVID and set our sights on economic recovery and addressing economic inequality through levelling up, the UK is embarking on a period of major investment in road infrastructure. Securing the expertise of the European supply chain will be essential, especially in the major tunnelling programmes from Highways England for the A303 and Lower Thames Crossing. The first consideration is a simple one of capacity. UK infrastructure is set to see a 'renaissance' of road investment in connecting every part of the country through a series of interventions. But this boom brings questions of how specialist contractor supply can keep pace with demand. |
