Traffex/Parkex went digital this year but its essential elements were the same as ever. It was attended by thousands of people who all care passionately about the traffic and transport sector; was a place of cutting edge debate and best practice and as always the trading floor of transport. One of the key themes was decarbonisation. Highways England promised to use its procurement power to influence change and from RIS 3 at least consider sustainability as a key factor in contract awards. This proves once again that sustainability makes good business sense. In the magazine this month we cover the highlights from Traffex, of course. We also have a feature and expert legal advice on the subject of aggregates. In this area, as much as any other, we can see the benefits of recycling and conservation to avoid waste and extra emissions. In some parts of the country these materials are scarce but as Highways England says, we have a huge quarry right in front of us running across the nation - the road network. Self-sufficiency and a more circular business model are becoming key business offerings and a matter of resilience. Also, the potential for the Government to tighten exemptions following a review of the aggregates levy underlines the power that taxation can and almost certainly will have in the future as the nation goes green. |
