Those who have read my blog will know that I am obsessed with kerbs. For a very niche and geeky subject I am constantly surprised by just how interesting many others find the subject, especially non-engineers. Of course, we know that they have practical uses for directing water, retaining upper pavement layers, providing demarcation and providing edge restraint; however kerbs are also political in terms of how space is apportioned. They can be both enabling and restricting, but despite some imagining that developments such as autonomous vehicles will render kerbs obsolete, I'm confident that they are here to stay. |
