Not really. This is all about our expertise Back in 2013, the Highways Agency inherited responsibility for maintaining the Historical Railway Estate (HRE) from the former British Railways Board (Residuary) Ltd. It doesn't matter what mode of transport used these 3,200 structures; it's now all about keeping them and the people who use them safe. Our engineers have a programme of maintenance work to make sure we can do this, and we carry out this work on behalf of the Department for Transport. Yes, there's a huge range of tunnels, bridges and viaducts that make up the HRE, most of which were built well over 100 years ago. Many will remain standing for many years to come but it's no surprise that some require our attention. Our expert engineers risk assess each one, giving it a priority rating, which means we can focus our attention on the structures that need our help the most. We have £13m this financial year, which we are using to keep these structures safe, as well as supporting opportunities to transfer ownership in order to re-purpose them. |
