Polymeric kerbs have been classified as 'Standard' under Clause 1118 in the MCHW.The MCHW was first published in 1992 and is comprised of six volumes that are used by road construction professionals in the preparation of the majority of UK highway construction contracts. The document is the primary source of information regarding the design, construction and maintenance of major roads, and covers everything from administrative procedures to the specification for highway works and the corresponding method measurements. Volume 1 is named the Specification for Highway Works and sets out the requirements and approvals process for goods, work or materials used in the construction and maintenance of major roads. The volume has 28 series and seven appendices for different types of works and specifications. Series 1100 covers 'Kerbs, Footways, Cycleways and Paved Areas' and as of February 2021, polymeric kerbs were included in the document under Clause 1118. This gives plastic road kerbs, such as Durakerb made by Dura Products, the green light for use in trunk road construction and maintenance, and removes all legislative barriers for their use in the UK. |
