Throughout the pandemic, the Transport Technology Forum (TTF) has supported the Department for Transport (DfT) in supplying vital information to understanding how lockdowns and other restrictions have impacted traffic. Although the DfT is well-informed about traffic on the strategic road network through Highways England, it had limited visibility on other roads. The TTF recently committed to continue its weekly monitoring of local authority traffic and transport data in 2021 and is calling for more transport departments to share their information. It has worked in partnership with Arup and White Willow Consulting, while ITS (UK) assisted in recruiting data sources. The importance of data has been brought home to traffic managers during the COVID-19 crisis, as driving patterns in towns and cities changed significantly. 'People talk about a new normal, but there is no sign of traffic levels settling down yet,' says Arup associate Yousef Majeed, who analysed the data. |
