'Cutting out jackknifing' includes this statement regarding ABS: 'The first system for commercial vehicles was launched by WABCO (now part of ZF) in 1981…"Eleven years before, Esso decided to evaluate the benefits of ABS for its fleet of tractor units. A Leyland Beaver (BV68) was retrofitted with Dunlop Maxaret ABS for evaluation. Tests were carried out at two proving grounds which had low coefficient-of-friction test surfaces. The results were so impressive that the decision was taken to retrofit the whole tractor fleet of Leyland Beavers. By the end of 1972, virtually all of the Leyland Beaver(BV68) tractor units had been retrofitted. In 1973, a large order was placed with AEC for its Mandator (3TG) tractors. All of these tractors entered service with Dunlop Maxaret ABS fitted, making the fleet 100% ABS-equipped. In the following years, all new tractors were fitted with ABS from new, initially Dunlop Maxaret but later which ever ABS was offered at the time by Seddon Atkinson and later ERF and Foden. |
